Published in the Series, Women in Development, edited by T. Scarlett Epstein, this eBook contains accounts of 12 women fieldworkers. The reflections collected here are distinctive in the sense that contributors conducted anthropological fieldwork in their own home country or among people with whose culture they could identify and those whose Language was their own mother tongue. Except for Hilda Tadria and Kate Crehan, all the other contributors are Asian women. The many different demands that are made on these Third World female researchers from their jobs, families etc~, create serious conflicts for them. Yet each contributor clearly states her determination to continue her commitment to further studies. This book therefore symbolises the way young Third World researchers are prepared to perform a ‘balancing act’ to advance the cause of women in their respective cultures.
