BRITISH MILITARY ARCHITECTURE IN LUCKNOW AND DELHI IN CONTEXT OF THE REVOLT OF 1857

© Natasha Baruah 2009

In his introduction to the book, “Buildings and Society”, Anthony King begins, firstly by questioning what one could learn of society by examining its buildings and physical environment, and secondly by asking what one would understand, in turn, of those buildings and environments by examining the society itself. Buildings, he explains are governed not just by physical factors but also by various other ones such as economic, social, political, religious and cultural and changes in society are reflected in the built environment and vice-versa. Since this paper is an attempt to understand how the design of a city space or the built form, alters the social life of people, I begin by taking into account King’s succinct observations on that front. My interest is to understand how the presence of the colonial British cantonments of Lucknow and Delhi, altered the social lives of the local inhabitants of the city and to understand how far the official considerations for military security affected the development of these two cities.
