Thought for the Week: While telcos are still in the news this week, upskilling seems to be a theme. Getting a pool of talent in emerging technologies available for industry is clearly crucial for India’s development and achieving a $5 Trillion economy.


This week:


Competition in Digital Payments: The digital payments space in India is a tough market. It is estimated that Paytm, Amazon Pay and PhonePe collectively lost Rs.20 Cr. per day in financial year 2019. With competition from UPI and RuPay increasing, the pressure is on for the players in this market.


Telecom troubles: In light of a recent ruling from India’s Supreme Court, the outstanding fees owed by the telcos is causing concern when taken together with the upcoming 5G auction. The telecoms industry is in a state of flux. The government has also recently announced its desire to merge 2 state owned telcos, BSNL and MTNL, the competition will increase.


Growth of SaaS in India: Improving mobile phone connectivity, digital payments and GST are increasing demand of SaaS in India. As more MSMEs spend on digital transformation, Nasscom estimates that the SaaS market is growing at an incredible 36% p.a.


Upskilling in India: Nasscom and SAP India have tied up to reskill/upskill the workforce in emerging technologies. The ‘FutureSkills’ programme of Nasscom aims to reskill over 2 million people over the next 5 years to create talent suitable for employment in the future.


Space Tech: IIT Delhi is collaborating with ISRO to set up a space technology cell to promote research in necessary technologies. ITT Delhi has become one of a number of premier institutions in India undertaking research in this field.


Upskilling collaborations: IBM and the Government have tied up to provide training in IT, networking and cloud computing. The SkillsBuild programme will be in collaboration with the Directorate General of Training within the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship.
